A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dark beige colored head.
S: Moderate aromas of roasted and charred malts are present in the nose along with notes of soy sauce.
T: The taste follows the smell and also has a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This oatmeal stout lacks the smoothness compared to other beers in the style but has a nice roasted and charred character if that is your cup of tea.

This was another beer that I picked up at Cable Beverage a few weeks back, as I hadn't had anything from Ireland in ages. That included their more famous, mass-market beers as Lough Gill was a brewery that I had never heard of before. As much as I don't drink Stouts this time of the year, it's been unseasonably could out for a cool and damp night, this was nice to relax to as it checked off all the proverbial boxes without being particularly outstanding.

No surprise that this poured like coffee both in hue and in consistency, as this was quite thin and came out of the can quickly. A ton of soft, silky mocha head topped it off as the bubbles were quite fine. The head almost looked solid as it took it's time settling down but the lacing left behind was nearly nonexistent aside from a few vertical streaks near the bottom of my pint glass. Not a strong aroma to this but the usual oatmeal, roasted coffee and similar undertone was there as there was some molasses, dark fruit, biter chocolate, and a hint of creaminess in the taste. Smooth, slick, and somewhat dry, this was not a very filling beer as the carbonation was light and I almost needed a chaser of water to get the last of it down when I was finished.

The alcohol was low as it was nearly impossible to feel any of it at any point during my time with this. The aftertaste was a bit sticky and cloying but overall, this was quite easygoing and impossible to dislike. Only "L2090/91" was written on the bottom of the can as I had no idea how old this was. I could have easily had this as a Coffee or Breakfast Stout but as it was, it was fine for a quiet night in while trying something new. Sliante!

Pours a dark, dark brown with a thick, light brown head that last and lasts. Even minutes later, it'll reduce, but it's still there completely covering the beer. This is one good looking beer.

The aroma is dense with chocolate - dark chocolate and milk chocolate mixed together. There's some coffee notes behind the chocolate, like a chocolate heavy mocha.

The taste is... Oh no. Oh no, no, no. The taste is metallic. I'm struggling to pick up flavours over the sharp, metal tang. It diminishes as the beer warms, but it's a huge flaw in an otherwise solid beer. I even opened a second one, thinking that maybe I just got a bad can, but the second one is identical. Beyond the metallic taste, there's some nice roasted grain flavour, but I cannot forgive the metallic tang.

Mouthfeel is good, light and effervescent but with a pleasant coating feeling on the finish.

If it wasn't for the metallic taste, this would be a really solid stout. Unfortunately, it's tainted by that metallic tang. Lough Gill clearly need to get their production checked out and remedy the situation. I don't know if it's their water or their equipment, but something is contributing the metallic flavours, I don't know how it didn't get caught in QC, and there's no room such huge mistakes in the already crowded craft beer market.

look: two finger tan coloured head with decent retention, beer is jet black, no light bleeding through whatsoever.

smell: smells good, big smokey roasted malt flavour, nice bit of milk chocolate, some espresso coffee, lot of dark fruit, especially fig, inviting.

taste: malt flavour little more subdued than it is on the nose, lot of the dark fruit flavour, lot of fig, bit of plum, cherry, lot of espresso, light dark chocolate, moderate bitterness on the finish, no real lingering flavours.

feel: light bodied, lightly carbonated, definitely watery but drinkable, creamy from the oats i suppose.

overall: a decent beer, but not a great beer, lacking depth of flavour, like all of lough gill’s beers it seems.
