Cascadian dark ales have a certain magnetism. Maybe it’s the malty, slightly boozy aromas, followed by a smooth blend of bitter and body; maybe it’s the lingering bitterness from the Warrior hops’ 100 IBUs. Whatever the draw may be, this beer is as funky and mysterious as one of our state’s weirdest roadside attractions.

On tap at Apothecary Ale House in Morgantown, WV.

This one pours a fairly dark brown color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells lightly roasty, with some chocolate.

This doesn’t really feel a whole lot like a black IPA – the hop character is pretty weak here. It feels kind of just like a watery porter or something. There’s a touch of chocolate, and some roast, but it’s all overall pretty boring.

This is light bodied, creamy but watery, and pretty drinkable.

This is pretty uninspired.
