Im sampling a cellar temp 22 oz bottle poured into my snifter. This was picked up at the brewery in July of 2022. Been to the brewery a bunch of times and surprised to be adding this one to the BA DB.
The beer pours a chestnut to amber color leaving the bottle and rests in my glass a darker mahogany with deep garnet highlights on the edges.
There is a dense creamy khaki colored head of 4 cm that almost overtops my glass. This fades to a sturdy edging and leaves some dense covering lacing on swirls and sips. Looks very nice in the glass.
Aroma is toffee, brown sugar and dark fruit, I get raisins and plums and lightly soaking rum, even though I dont think this was ever barrel aged. I also get some lemon notes and a bit of black tea from hops, never any fusol notes or heavy booze.
First sip reveals a smooth texture and medium body with very fine tingly carbonation. Not a sticky feel or coating from this one.
Flavor is similar to the nose with toffee and brown sugar and some raisins giving way to black tea and some pine sap and general light bitterness. The booze is hidden here with no warming and overall this is pretty drinkable for 10.4%. Maybe even dangerously so! Im glad I picked this one up during my recent visit and would recommend to folks who like barleywines.
