Oldtimer Trio from Hertl Braumanufaktur. 12 oz bottle. Purchased from Bierotek, Bamberg, Germany, in March 2022. Price unknown. Stored on room temperature shelf at store and 34 degrees at home. Reviewed 07/02/23 (Review 3033). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Sticker on rear of label “Mindestens haltbar bis: 28.08.22”. Served at 56.3 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 60.4 degrees.
Appearance – 3
First pour – Pale Gold (SRM 4), hazy.
Body – Gold (SRM 5), opaque. Under direct light, same but the opaqueness comes from the quantities of tiny particles in suspension. When rear lite, translucent gold.
Head – Huge (Maximum 7.5 cm, aggressive center pour), beige, medium to low density, average retention, receding to a frothy 1.2 – 1.5 cm crown, and a rocky complete cap. When I popped the flip top, the beer immediately foamed over into the sink and the snifter – I ended up with two partially full snifters in order to minimize loss.
Lacing – Poor. A few small chunks of foam remain hanging on the glass.
Aroma – 3 – Weak smoke and weaker malt. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3 – Begins slightly fruity and slightly sour, like a weak cider. No malt, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (8.5 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. Slow gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Thin, watery, medium carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3 Lack of maltiness knocks aroma and flavor scores down, as does the watery body and gross appearance under direct light. I think this bottle is contaminated.
