Instituto De La Cerveza Artesana "Malalts De Malta"
3,20€ / 23 cl glass on tap @ Birradero
Notes: Quad with black cherry. 11.5% ABV. Dark reddish chestnut body beneath a creamy off-white head. In the aroma dark fruits and dark malt mix well, although some alcohol shows. That carries into the flavor with some additional Belgian yeast character (clove, other spiciness) and some caramelish and sugary malt. Medium-full in body with a very fine-bubbled median carbonation that leaves it supple and smooth. Semi-dry in the finish with the alcohol adding some assistance to the moderate hop bitterness. Interesting with a good cherry character but not quite so well done on the quad side.

250ml keg from Abirradero, Barcelona (€4.50):
Quite disappointing overall really, this one wasn't an overly strong or complex offering & to be honest that's what you expect when you pick up an 11.5% abv. beer. The promised malts & cherries were in attendance from early on which meant things got off to a decent enough start but there wasn't much following on from there & it was all a bit underwhelming really. Some alcohol grains & a touch of spice make an appearance nearer the end, there was some further ripe fruits & sugars too but it definitely wasn't complex & it was one that I just couldn't get into really.
