On-draught @ Lazarus for $5.50 per 20oz.
Brewed with 100% Beechwood smoked malt, and it shows... there's obvious smokiness in play but it's not as harsh or aggressive as one would find in traditional Bamberger expressions of the style. Hints of smoked ham, honeyed malt sweetness, faint floral hop character.
Simplistic for the style if not rudimentary, ticking the boxes of smoke, malt sweetness, and mild hop presence needed for a rauchbier without batting for the bleachers in terms of depth of flavour, uniqueness of smoke flavour (I assume they just dumped a bag of Weyermann malts in and that was that), or intensity.
Slightly coarse. Wet. Well-carbonated. Oddly refreshing. Medium-bodied.
This will seem mellow to Schlenkerla devotees, but it's a nice drinkable alternative to bigger rauchbiere that's great to have access to stateside. Definitely a brew I'd order again or purchase in sixers at an $11ish price point. Absolutely worth a try.
