On-draught @ Lazarus. $6.50 per 16oz pour.
7.80% ABV.
Brief flavour duration is the first characteristic I notice. Fleeting hints of grape, plum, and date. Moderate malty sweetness. Very cleanly attenuated owing to German yeast.
Not getting the ale yeast esters I'd expect in a great expression of the style. No banana or clove.
Hop presence is minimal (to style).
Alcohol presence is quite well disguised.
Smooth, wet, thin, surprisingly light-bodied, well-carbonated, and unrefreshing. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
No off flavours are present.
Drinkable and enjoyable, but the brevity of flavour really holds it back. Not something I'd take over Schneider Weisse or other great traditional German expressions of the style, and locally it's forever doomed to stand in the shadow of Live Oak's Primus, but I'm glad I tried it and those drinkers after a Weizenbock with more pronounced dark fruit flavours will be pleased with this.
