Pours a pitch-black coloration with a tiny, fizzy head. Smells of slightly roasted, caramel malt and estery banana notes, as well as some chocolate and hints of coffee and licorice. Taste is a decent balance of slightly roasted, caramel malt and strong notes of banana and chocolate, lighter dark fruit and red berries, with notes of fig and redcurrant, as well as hints of coffee, licorice and vanilla. Finishes with a medium sweetness and some banana, chocolate and hints of red berries and licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and light/medium carbonation.
I didn't dislike this as much as I expected to, although it certainly does have a somewhat unusual flavor profile for the style, being dominated by quite estery banana notes and some chocolate, giving a distinct Banana Split feel to this along with the hints of vanilla. While I'm missing some more roasted and bitter notes, it's not quite as syruppy sweet as I feared, with a good body and mouthfeel as well. Certainly and unusual example of the style, but not too bad in its own way,
