Pimedus pours into my glass less than the deep, opaque brownish black I was expecting. Rather it's a crystal clear, very deep and sullen ruby red colored beer. The head is dense, mousse like, cream colored and lasting.
That first sniff reveals an aroma that is almost candylike in its sweetness. That sweetness evolves into something more like brown sugar. Hints of damp earth give the nose a little bit of depth and backbone. Sweet earthiness move into a short finish where I smell leafy European hops.
Pimedus is medium full in body but lacks the lushness I would usually want in a Baltic porter. Flavors of overripe stone fruit combine with dark sugars. This leads straight into a leathery, tobacco tinted dryness. Dryness leads all the way into a finish full of leafy, grassy European hops.
Overall, Pimedus feels like a somewhat haphazard attempt at a Baltic porter. It lacks the chocolate and roasted coffee flavors I've found in other examples of the style. This, combined with a lack of lushness in the mouthfeel make for a fairly thin beer for what it's supposed to be.
