This is a "lost notebook" review from '04.
Pleasant deep brown/amber color. Average head with not a lot of lacing, but some.
Smell is of dry hop, and something like overcooked vegetables. Not quite as strong as asparagus, but on that track.
Taste comes off with a brief initial hit of hops, and then tailspins into a strange burnt metallic spice flavor that is hard to pinpoint because it is so out of whack. It ends in a very dry kind of way.
Overall not what i'd call a good IPA. Tough to even call it one at all, really. The Bower City Pale Ale comes closer to the mark.

Medium copper with a soft, fluffy light tan head. Lots of miniscule straming bubbles. Good hoppy nose. Very mild malt also present. Malt is much more powerful in the palate, and the hops take a reluctant back seat. Palate is 180 degrees from the aroma. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side, with the hops contributing to the dry finish. Overall, a drinkable beer, but not the hop intensity on an IPA just isn't there. Good for an APA, but a bland IPA.

Hazy copper color with a large frothy off white head that leaves some lacing in my glass, citrus and piney hop aroma. Balanced fruity and caramel flavors with a decent hop bite, medium body with a creamy and soft mouthfeel, finishes with a mild bitterness, more of an English style IPA.

Pours out golden orange and sits strawberry orange in the glass with a good sized white head fading fast to the sides.
Smells mildly hoppy with very green and grassy aromas. Sweet and malty with traces of nuts.
Tastes initially sweet and malty and moves into the all-around light flavor of hops; hop presence is minimal. Bitterness enters and goes quickly near the finish. Lightly bitter with some spicy and green flavors lingering.
Crisp in the medium body with adequate carbonation. A very easy and non-assertive IPA, suitable for beginners, but not geared towards hopheads. Quite light and easy to manage.

Perfectly bronze in color, with a fizzy pale beige head that zips dwon to a fine film quickly.
Aroma, vague whispers of soft fruity suggestions hint themselves, ever so shyly, more malty than most in this component as well. Very sweet, even treacly, associations of maple, cherry, and more.
Taste: Nice little fruity hop fandango, a sweet shuffle on the palate, then, alas, it fades into the distance. Tiny trickles of bitterness, some bracing bites on the tongue, but not quite enough. Makes it smooth, easily approachable, and utterly ordinary. Flavor, not un-enjoyable, still lasts for a nice ride, and gives good marks for the finish, the drinkability, though the body thins out too much...yeah, it's a decent IPA...but, some of us yearn for better than that!
Pretty decent overall, and reminds me of the local Bristish-style from Summit..Lord, how that used to be my end-all/be-all...time to re-review that one, too!

After a year to two hiatus, this is rereleased as part of Gray's new "Limited Edition" line (see also: Wassail Ale).

The nose is part toasty, and part piney, and mostly subdued.
Begins with emphasis on the malts. Toffee and caramel, all toasty and warm. Some graininess pokes out, along with driplets of butter. This seems like an English IPA. Then the hops hit. And even then, despite all the pine, it still seems mostly UK.
But it's not.
Sure, the bitterness is modest, and this is actually balanced(!) on its malt-hop axis. But at the end of the day, it is just a standard issue American IPA, if, perhaps, one that focuses more on malt than most.
Moderate in stature, with stunted carbonation. A true session IPA.
This may be without a defined strength, but it is absolutely without any noteworthy flaws.

Another Middle West IPA that breaks away from the west coast style. Hop aroma and bitterness is present and adundant, but the malt aroma and flavor is more dominant than most IPAs. The beer pours a cloudy orange with a wispy white head. The aroma is deep malty, perhaps Munich malt and caramel malts, with a nice piney hop snap. The malt aroma surprised me. The flavor is again filed with generous malty undercurrents, not the syrupy sweet malt taste that is used to balance some west coast high IBU IPAs, but more roasted and caramel notes. The hops are present in the finish, providing a nice bite to balance the malt flavors. The body is a bit light, but the beer works and is easily drinkable.
