Pitch black topped with a retreating brown lace.
The aroma is full of caramel fudge, espresso, flaked oats, blueberries, and anise.
The big, plump chocolate and caramel maltiness is first across the mouth, backed with mocha/espresso notes, and a vaporous fruitiness that hints at berries and cherries. Liquorice wells up and joins that subtle grainy smoothness that oats bring. Some indistinct bourbon notes, continuing on the aforementioned cherry and adding burnt vanilla, and vague woodiness. There is no actual barrel-aging involved, so these nuances are somewhat more impressive. It finishes with a long lingering bitter-cocoa, coffee grounds, and a minor dead leaf hoppiness.
It approaches full bodied with a fleecy texture and little noted carbonation.
Just as the name obviously implies, this is a beefed up version of their Oatmeal Stout. And they've pulled it off well.
