It's not often that a beer defines a culture and a culture defines a beer. Kölsch is one of those styles. Köln Germany unified around the style as a means to compete with the popularity of lagers and brewers of Köln even swore an oath to uphold the style. Now centuries later you can kick back and share in the culture of crisp.

Springdale Beer Co. "KÖLSCH MON€Y"
16 fl. oz. can
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: When I first poured this I got a pretty big head on it but it dissolved by the time I found the receipt for it. Odd. The head is a creamy white cap and the body is a hazy straw gold. There's definitely something unusual going on in the aroma. What's up with that? It's quite vinous but apart from the word "vinous" actually being on the label there's no mention of any additional ingredients. Is this from Nelson Sauvin or some other New Zealand or Australian hop that gives off a lot of gooseberry characteristics? That's my guess. Whatever the case is it smells great. Of course I'd never expect white grapes in a Kölsch-style beer, but whatever, I can live with it. It's still floral so there's that. On to the taste then... it's clearly Pilsner malt as there's a grassiness to its otherwise sweetish and grainy malt. The white wine characteristic remains, and it's also floral, lightly herbal, and a hint citrusy. It's just a touch honeyish as well and I wonder if there's a tiny bit of honey malt in the grain bill. I can clearly tell that they've used Kölsch yeast but I can't really explain that. I just brewed a Köln-style beer and that yeast really does make a difference. I guess there's a little bit of an apple and distant berry character to it. A median to moderate bitterness of around 25 or so IBUs balances it rather nicely, leaving it a touch sweetish upfront but then dry in the finish with the herbal hop notes coming forward. It's at 4.8% ABV which is what almost all of the beers from Köln are at, and you could certainly drink a lot of this if you wanted to. There's something on the label about an award, what was it? ... ... ... I'd recycled the can and had to go retrieve it. It won a bronze medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival. It certainly deserves it, and it probably only took bronze because of the white wine-like hops. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp, as it should be. It seems like the carbonation is natural but I could be wrong. The limited head retention and lacing are odd to me, and its only flaw in my opinion. Regarding the unusual hops, almost all of the beers from Köln use Tettnanger and Hallertauer but Gaffel am Dom (at least) has done some experimental brews with different hops and therefore I don't think that this is off-style in anyway.

On draught at Clinton Hall beer garden, NYC.
L: Clear, yellow gold with a couple of streams of bubbles and a thin cap.
S: Not much.
T: Spicy noble hops with a big wedge of lemon. Very bitter for the style.
F: Sharp and thin mouthfeel, gassy, bone dry.
O: A nicely grassy but over-hopped and way over-carbonated kölsch. Much too aggressive. Not refreshing at all. Struggled with it, to be honest.

Pours like a beer should. Rich golden color, crystal clear, with a tight foamy head that lasts long and clings hard.

The smell is of biscuity and slightly toasty malt, a bit floral, noticeable white wine, just a bit of lemon, a little yeasty.

This is a very good tasting beer. The white wine like flavor makes a play for dominance, but is fairly quickly tamed by the biscuity malts with just a hint of toasty-ness and a tiny bit of sweetness. There's a nice, bright lemon taste that emerges, but never dominates. There's a little floral hoppiness floating on top and a mild spicy note that lingers but doesn't accumulate. Noticeable but not excessive bitterness.

Light body, crisp, nice and clean feel.

Yep...this is a go-o-o-od one. We called around and found it in a store we frequent about half an hour away as the brewery was sold out. I rarely seek out beers, but this one was worth the extra effort. Worthy of the style moniker, in my opinion.

Cloudy gold,orange appearance
Medium light carbonation with about an average body.
Aroma is a really nice mix of sweet floral honey, malt, grass and maybe some mild citrus.
Taste has a very mild sweetness otherwise it stays true to the aroma. Grassy taste lingers in the aftertaste.
A really nice attempt at the style, one I would look for again.

Clear and bright golden color with a dusting of suspended sediment. Capped with a fluffy white head. Good retention.

Smells very floral, crisp grains, pilsner malt, some sweetness.

Very floral upfront, a hint of lemon zest and green pepper flesh, grainy, wheat cracker-like malt, clover honey, a touch of white wine/green grape Kolsch yeast on the back end; grassy and zesty Noble hop bitterness and residual mead/honey-like sweetness linger momentarily but leans fairy crisp.

A solid representation of the style. Well done.

Taste - Light floral hops. Crackery malts finish more like white bread. Finishes dry. 4.5
Feel- crisp - medium high - high carbonation- 4.75
Overall - I mean, I think it’s a great example of the style - 4.75.

This on pours a lovely crystal clear burnished gold color. Frothy white head forms then dissipates pretty quickly leaving no residual head. Aroma has notes of sweet white bread with a touch of honey and graininess.

Taste follows the nose with that sweet white bread malt, a touch of graininess, some light honey notes, lemon, lemon grass and orange blossom honey. Just a touch of grassy bitterness on the back end. Feel is light, crisp, and easy dinking. Moderate carbonation. Sorta of the drier side on the finish at least thats the impression Im getting from that lingering light bitterness.

Overall this is an excellent kolsch. It was perfect in that I drank it, and immediately wanted another. Simple, yet flavorful. Thanks Maynard!!

Pours a deep gold color with plenty of fizzy white head and moderate lacing. Mostly clear. Aroma is grains, grass and bready malts. Smells good, but slightly weak. Taste is more bready malts & grains with very low bitterness. Medium carb, and crisp. Good beer.

Thanks to WunderLlama for this one from a recent ninja box. 16oz can (dated 1/28/21) poured into 14oz teku. Poured a lightly hazy dark gold color with an inch of white head that good retention and very low lacing.

The aroma was nice crisp grains, with a touch of ,alt sweetness, and some floral hops.

Similar on the tongue, with the hops showing a bit brighter.

The body was a touch fuller than is usual for the style, smooth, and had a clean, dry finish.

Drinkability was very good, as I generally find the style to be.

Overall, a solid and enjoyable brew, certainly worth trying if you see it.

This one pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like bready malt, lemon, grassy hops, and doughiness.

This is a pretty solid and emblematic take on the style. There's a light lemony and grassy hop character, with a nice doughy and mildly sweet bready hop character.

This is light bodied, crisp and clean, with a good drinkability to it. It goes down easily.

This is a nice beer to drink a few of and not think about it too much.

A moderate pour from a 16-oz. can yielded a finger of fizzy white head with short retention, no lasting lacing.
Large bubbles pop leaving behind a thin creamy cap. Clear yellow-straw in color, lots of fine rising bubbles.

Bready malt greets the nose, wheaty and lightly toasted. A hint of lemon, grape and some yeasty rising dough.

Semi-dry with moderate bitterness. The label states "Crisp Bright Vinous" and they are right, there is a noticeable dry white wine taste. Subtle malt taste blended well with grape and faint citrus. Mild hops are floral herbal and spicy.
The finish is clean and Lager-like crisp, bitterness builds to above average and lingers during the aftertaste.

Light bodied with soft lasting carbonation, session-able and easy going down. Matches style guidelines across the board.
I am now on the lookout for an imported (German) Kolsch, I need to see how this compares. Canned on 8/18/20.
