This beer is jam packed with boysenberry and raspberry aromas and flavors. The lactose and madagascar vanilla add to the creaminess and rounded mouthfeel.

Generally not huge on Milkshake IPAs, but I've actually had a few decent ones (though I sometimes lump them in, mentally, with lactose IPAs to be honest) recently. Vanished Valley are typically quite well-liked, so I decided to give this one a shot.
This pours a deep reddish-purple color; holy berries, Batman! Nice off-pink/white-ish head that lasts and lasts, though it really only gets to about a finger-and-a-half at its highest point, and it's currently sitting at a half-finger in my glass after about 5-7 minutes post-pour. Pretty much opaque, but I have to hand it to them... this looks quite gorgeous if you don't mind some utterly decadent coloration in your milkshake IPA.
The nose is quite nice, too, honestly. Very organic fruit note with heaping helpings of the advertised tart boysenberries and mildly-sweet raspberries, though I also pick up blackberry, strawberry-like notes, and a bit of stemmy blueberry. A touch of dankness and light citrus fruit keeps this in the "hoppier" realm of things, but I'm honestly kinda expecting a straight-up fruit beer here. Nothing actually wrong with that, but I'd be a bit disappointed if this didn't follow up with some more "IPA"-like character on the tongue.
The first few sips I take are definitely just... berries. It's not a sour beer whatsoever, though, and the berry flavor, along with the light notes of sweet vanilla bean, really keep this in the dessert beer realm. There isn't much IPA-like about it all other than the light zing of dank resinous notes coming across in the finish. There's a tad bit of citrus and herbal suggestions as well, but this really does drink like a heavy fruit beer with some hop undercurrents. I enjoy it but no way I would want more than one. The feel is just dense and jam-packed (get it?! Berries!) with fruit, and there isn't much subtlety to it. Moderately-low carbonation and a big ol' body for a 6.5% IPA. A fun drink but not something I'll seek out again. That said, this beer and other, better ones in this sub-sub-style prove that there are some things out there for me within the milkshake trend, even if they aren't IPA-like at the end of the day.

Not really a milkshake IPA. More like a fruited ale. Not thick at all. Kind of confusing.
