This version has a 9.0% abv (and no SE monicker). It pours with an impressively dense off-white head. It was slow to recede and leaves some thicker webs of lace. The liquid is amber-brown color with a mild haze.
Lightly sweet aroma with toffee overtones. Some alcohol is present to the nose with just a touch of hop.
Smooth flavor and body. Decent level of carbonation, particularly for a Barley Wine. The flavor is almost smoky behind the low level of unfermented maltose sweetness. Plenty of alcohol warmth as expected. There's enough hop bitterness to keep this beer from becoming cloy. All in all, a superior Barley Wine, imho.

Bottle: Poured a dark copper color ale with a large off-white foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of dry caramelized malt notes with some grainy notes is more or less interesting. Taste is a mix of dry unrefined grainy caramelized malt notes with light toffee. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. I didn’t appreciate this barleywine very much, too grainy and missing some richness.
