Wissahickon Brewing Co. ""Experimental" Pale Ale"
on tap @ the brewery on 5 March 2017
$5 / pint

Notes: Unfiltered and un-fined. 4.5% ABV. Cloudy tan body with a yellow-orange cast beneath a finger-thick head of yellowed white. The head retention and lacing are very good. Aromas of golden caramel, toffee, crusty bread, apple, and pear. The flavor follows, adding some lightly earthy and piney hops into the mix. Medium bodied and crisp, with the yeast adding a little bit to the mouthfeel. Really bright and fresh, a very "alive" beer not unlike a good English cask ale - but with the yeast included; and on that note, although it might be adding a bit of nuttiness, I don't find the yeast to be giving much else, certainly not any of the negative notes that it sometimes can (actual yeast flavor, acidity, chalkiness, etc.) This is not an NEIPA but it looks like one, and I have to wonder if I'd like it as much had it been filtered? Is the yeast perhaps actually toning down some of the flavors, or would filtration do that? Or would filtration throw off the balance as it's currently superbly balanced? No way to know. It's firmly bitter, and you get the caramel and toffee upfront with a light touch of sweetness, followed by the fruitiness, the bitterness, and then some pine and earthiness in the moderately dry finish. It's really quite quaffable.
