Wissahickon Brewing Co. "Back The Crick"
$6/pint at the brewery on 3 March 2018
Notes via stream of consciousness: "Back The Crick" is a little joke on the way Philadelphians say the word creek. That hits home with me as I grew up literally feet from an entrance to Fairmount Park which houses the Wissahickon "crick". It's a slightly hazy amber in color beneath a short head of white. The aroma displays earthy and leafy hops over caramelish malt. Hmmmm, I thought this was an American IPA? A West coast IPA in fact. Was I given the right beer? I'm not getting citrus or tropical, and this is my first beer. OK, let's see about the flavor... well, the flavor follows, just reversed with more caramelish malt than leafy and earthy hops. It's boldly bitter. It's listed at 80 IBUs and I totally believe that, although that amount of bitterness is usually reserved for double IPAs. It's not unheard of, but it's high given the amount of malt here (1.073 O.G.). So, at this point, I'm pretty sure I do have the right beer, there's nothing else on tap that would have this much bitterness, and I hate to say it but it's a bit much. 70 or less would have been better. That of course leads to a very dry finish with the bitterness lingering. In conclusion, I felt as if this was more of an English style IPA with a massive bitterness level. It seems confused to me, or else I'm confused. Either way, it's not Wissahickon's best by any stretch.
