650ml bottle - Bruce's first barrel-aged brew, apparently. From the address on the label, it looks like it was made at Coulee Brew Co. down in Lethbridge.

This beer pours a pretty solid black abyss, with very slight amber basal edges, and a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent electrical discharge pattern lace around the glass as it slowly sinks out of sight.

It smells of chocolate liqueur, bready and doughy caramel malt, toffee pudding, some mild wet oaky notes, cafe-au-lait (with a shot of whiskey mixed in), some dark stone fruitiness, and very, very subtle earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is rich medium cocoa powder, grainy and bready caramel malt, biscuity toffee, rye spirit, damp wooden staves, a bit of peppery spice, faint ashy notes, day-old coffee grounds, and more well-understated musty, herbal, and dead floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly tame in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a heavy middleweight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess trying to get off the ground as things warm up a tad around here. It finishes off-dry, the malt, cocoa, and Yuk-a-Flux frooty essences presiding.

Overall - well, I don't know how long they put the base KGB in the Bourbon wood, but I would wager that it wasn't very long, which isn't a bad thing, per se. It's just that I've had the original many times, and this one has basic whiskey flavour, to be sure, but not enough to justify the elevated price tag. Oh well, learning curves, and all that, I suppose.
