A big, one and a half inch, dense, creamy chestnut head floats above the black beer. While pouring, it is rich, reddish brown. A thick lace coats the Harp nonic glass.
The aroma opens with sweet roasted malt, while coffee and milk chocolate follow. An unexpected hint of smoke is a pleasant touch. Unfortunately, I found no coconut or stone fruit.
The flavor begins with roasted malt that adds just the right balance of bitterness and lactose sweetness. Genersally, the flavor follows the nose, however, the flavor contains a hint of roasted coconut. The finish is long and mild, and late bitterness is noticeable.
The texture is smooth and almost creamy against a medium to full body. Light carbonation prickles, particularly in the finish. At 3.7% ABV, one would expect no presence of alcohol, yet it is here, although faint.
This is a tasty beer. Even though the coconut is so faint, I really did enjoy it and easily finished the half growler on a cool, sunny October afternoon.
