On cask at the Draught House 42nd Anniversary Party.

The beer is now called Grackle Black IPA, but it is the same recipe.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is very heavy on the pine with a little bit of roasted malt. The flavor is more of the same, with the piney hops standing out. There is a little bit of bitterness from the hops. Medium mouthfeel and low to medium carbonation. A nice Black IPA, but the piney hops dominate the flavor a little too much for my liking.

Not sure when, or if, the whole "Black IPA" trend will receive its own style category, but it probably should. This beer was more like a Porter/IPA blend than any currently defined style...

Pours a dark seal brown hue with hints of burgundy at the edges. The head is an attractive, tannish brown color and well-retained, leaving traces of lacing along the inside of the English pint glass. Nice aroma of roasted grains, a hint of coffee, and resinous, earthy hops. Some chocolate and dark fruits thrown in as well.

The flavor improved as this beer warmed, another not-so-characteristic trait of an "American IPA" that made me think Porter or Stout. Of course, the dark chocolate and coffee malts didn't affect my stylistic designations in the slightest. Lots of bitter roast, here, competing with the earthy hops on the finish. Nice mouthfeel, close to full-bodied and well carbonated; got smoother as the bubbles lessened. Overall, a very tasty "IPA" that I will hopefully have again before the Draught House runs out of it.
