Half-pint at the Draught House.
I'll be the first to admit--I'm a sucker for a nitro-tap. The creamy, dark khaki head of Barrel Porter retains exceedingly well atop the opacity of the a seal brown body. Nice lacing, too. The aroma suggests milk chocolate-like lactose in the ballpark of Young's Dbl. Chocolate Stout. Sharp whiskey barrel tannins balance the sweetness well, as do hints of vanilla and musty hops.
The flavor is a mixture of sourish whiskey mash, lactose, soil, and bitter dark chocolate. Bits of grape tannins after Barrel Porter warms past serving temp. Mouthfeel is thin and slightly watery for the style, and although the creaminess from the nitro-tap is an added bonus, the overall impression is not quite that of a porter. All in all, this is good stuff, but I wish it had more of a whiskey barrel presence and fewer lactose flavors. Worth a try.
