Medium sized off-white foamy head. Clear, dark amber in color with tons of carbonation rising from the bottom. Head has a good retention, dissipating slowly to a sticky foamy lace. Grainy, citrus aroma with notes of lemon and bread. Good medium mouthfeel, yet at the same time, it tends to be a bit soft…nice. Sweet bready malt start that continues as a pleasant malt backbone throughout. Slightly citric lemony hop flavors come in towards the middle and tend to peak then taper off in the finish. Malts pick back up in the end and are quite noticeable, yet well balanced in the finish. The rye lends a nice breadiness to the brew and a smoothness that is quite appealing. Becomes slightly cloudy on the last pour. A nice well-balanced and very drinkable brew that I’ve already made sure to pick up again. This one definitely isn’t better then Wolnzacher Roggenbier, but it’s a good stand-in since Wolnzacher isn’t that easy to get a hold of, and it certainly beats the pants off of Redhook Sunrye Ale (these are the only three rye beers I’ve discovered to date). Unfortunately, it’s a seasonal brew, but I’ll look forward to it again next year.

The beer arrived at the table a honey golden color with a huge off-white head that lasts and lasts. The aroma is rye, slight sweetness, and no hop aroma. The flavor is hoppy and crisp. The finish is crisp and bitter. The body is a little thin.

Capital Ale House 14 ounce draft, beer menu lists ABV at 5.0%.
