Light and fairly malty, with a definite note of ginger.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a bright yellow color and a clear texture. There was a small amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Below average lacing.

S: A somewhat underwhelming aroma of malt, light spices, honey, ginger and citrus fruit.

T: Tasted of some mild honey notes, a lot of malt (a bit much), some citrus (orange, lemon), ginger, some mild hops notes, and some spices mixed in (pepper, for the most part). A pretty lackluster flavor for the most part. In spots it seems okay, but is mostly thin and underpowered.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a lively finish. Light-bodied.

O: A disappointing beer for the most part. Could have been interesting.

Legend Brewing Co. "Z Dam Ale"
12 fl. oz. bottle, coded "042517" and sampled on 062917
$1.67 @ Kroger, Virginia Beach, VA

Notes via stream of consciousness: I love these beers that have no information regarding the style of the beer on the label. What is it? Seriously, I hate that, although it can sometimes be fun to figure out what it is. It pours a hazy yellow-gold with visible particulate in suspension beneath a finger-thick head of frothy bright white. The aroma suggests sweetish grainy malt with dried grass and coriander powder. The flavor follows, adding in some ginger and a touch of lemon zest. It's not a Belgian-style witbier though as there's no Belgian yeast character. They did a good job with the spices though. The ginger gives a little bite but not too much, and the citrus helps to cut through the sweetish grainy malt. There's not a lot of bitterness, and it finishes with a combination of sweetish malt and zesty spice that gently fades away. As a summer refresher I could certainly see this going a long way. It's medium bodied and gently crisp, and if it was any lighter - or any fuller - I don't think it would work as well, you have to support that ginger, and if you made it lighter and cut down on the ginger it wouldn't really be clear as to what it was. So I think I would call this a "ginger ale" which would not be good to put on the label, that would scare too many people, but maybe just "summer ale" or "spiced ale" would work. Anyway, I'm halfway through and I don't feel the ginger has really built up on my palate, so that's good, and it's maintained a fairly good creamy collar and left some nice splashes and patches of lace behind. And smelling it now I get distinct ginger whereas before I thought it was coriander. It's pleasant, and to be honest, kind of reminiscent of a summer day to me. I wasn't expecting much but I'm impressed. Had I known it was this good I'd have bought more, this would be absolutely perfect for an outdoor BBQ.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear, vibrant pale/gold with 1/2" dense white head that recedes as a moderate pace. Lacing is poor, retention is not bad.

S: Bright & herbal with some traces of citrus rind. Maybe honey as well. Rather well-balanced notes create what is overall a very pleasant bouquet.

T: Much the same as the nose with an additional floral quality leading into the mid palate. Finishes with a nice blend of pale malt & citrusy hop character. Really well-put-together progression of flavor.

M: Moderate carb married to a light, slightly slick body. Ideal for the flavors that are showcased here.

O: This brew is simply well-thought-out & well-executed. Far exceeds the modest expectations that I had for it initially.

Gold in color, small head crystal clear. Bready, grainy, corn scent.

Taste that follows the nose. Toasted breadiness, wheat, some nutiness, zesty and spicy enough in the flavors, quite dry in the finish. Some astringency and insufficient balance from malt to hop finish.

Nicely carbonated, alcohol presence but not a brew that I'm apt to go back to.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic glass. Clear, light yellow in color. Has a spice background taste. Rosemary? Overall, not my favorite beer from this brewery. Perhaps I set their brown ale as the standard they need to beat.

Golden in color with light haze. Flecks of suspended sediment. A 1 1/2 finger white head with no lacing.

Toasted malt with a whiff of ginger.

More toasted malt with subtle ginger and citrus.

Light bodied and moderately crisp.

Not complex by any means, but pleasant enough. I could have used more spice and citrus, but it's intended to be a light summer ale, which it succeeds at. Easy to drink, with just enough spice to give it a bit of character.
