L: Murky mahogany brown color with a medium head and nice lacing on the glass.

S: Fresh pressed ginger, the ginger is very overwhelming in the aroma, it dominates the rest of the aroma and I get very little Belgian elements or malt. Maybe a slight bit of caramel and raisen.

T: As in the aroma ginger is very strong and covers most of the taste. I get some tootsie roll and raison in the backend but once again ginger takes it all over.

F: Medium to heavy body, good carbonation.

O: This beer is just way too much ginger for me and the ginger covers the other elements of an abbey ale

perhaps my favorite beer from our visit to zuni street, and unexpectedly so. its a belgian dark ale, mild as can be, only loosely belgiana with an obviously cooler fermented yeast strain and a lot less body than it looks like it should have based on the color and apparent density, brewed with fresh ginger, and fermented down to about dry. its like nothing i have ever had before, and easily the most ambitious beer on the menu in here right now, yet already seemingly quite popular with the regulars. a little hazy and deep cocoa brown on the pour, pushing eggshell black, and nice and creamy looking. aroma and flavor show fresh juiced or pressed ginger, almost sharp at first, but the palate attenuates almost immediately, and its earthy and natural and refreshing, and probably on the precipice of how much of this i would want in a beer, but its genius with the dark dry roasty malts, and the belgian yeast quite naturally bridges the gap, but in such a mean to be sort of way, it really is a special synergy here, and these guys have created something rather special with this. i love the subtle belgian elements, the relative dryness overall, and the retained freshness of the ginger. carbonated well and without too much body, i could have had several of these, and am quite sure its the best beer they are making right now. even if you dont love ginger, or especially if you arent sold on ginger in your beer, give this early masterwork a shot. loved it!
