a well made beer, but somewhat basic, which is the case with a lot of them in here, and in this instance, guilty of being safe too. like, when you hold up a clear bottle of newcastle, its striking how its anything but brown, but calls itself a brown ale, crimson, brick red, chestnut, amber, mahogany, anything but brown. thats the case here, this is crazy pale, and really doesnt have much chocolate malt character to it when i drink it, its light, more english crystal than anything else it seems, just the lightest cocoa note to it. its pretty sweet too, i get vanilla in the nose, and a sort of candied pine thing in the flavor, some residual grain sugar meeting the finishing hops a little early. i dont mind a little sweetness, but id like more english yeast character to mellow it out, that element is really lacking in this beer. i like the flavor profile, but want more yeast, more darker grain, and more depth of flavor overall. good for those new to the style, seeking something on the lighter side, but for me, this is brown ale season, and this one doesnt quite stand up to the weather, pleasant as it is...
