One of the legendary Speight's brews that is famous in alehouses the length and breadth of New Zealand. Our recipe dates from 1929 and nothing much has changed since then. A deep coffee and chocolate flavour makes this porter one to savor. Pouring at your Alehouse now.

Pours a dark, dark brown with a rather tame tan head. I would have liked to see a thicker head, but maybe it was just my pour.

Smells like,, well heaps of chocolate malt. Sweet, cocoa, not much hops. But nice!

Taste is pretty much what you would expect from a porter; a dry style, though. If there's such a thing as an Irish Porter, this is what I would imagine. I imagine a bit of the dryness comes from a bit of black patent.

Mouthfeel is a medium body with nice, smooth, mellow carbonation.

Drinkability isn't as nice as I had hoped, but I imagine that comes from the roasted barley/black patent dryness in the character.

Travelling through NZ earlier this year was all the more pleasurable with the help of the Speight's range of beers and this little beauty added to it.

Smelled of Roasted, malt, a little bit of honey and caramel was in there as well.
Tasted of pretty much the same and the flavour and the mouthfell lasted a while.
The thing that i enjoyed most about this beer is that is was a great session beer, as are most from the speight's range.

Pours a very pretty clear dark red/brown, quite opaque, with a big rocky off white head, lacing is considerable. Smell is lots of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, reminds me of Bear Republics darker ales. Taste is very roasty, lots of coffee and chocolate, although a bit of a thin cidery taste, possible it has outlived its shelf life. Still quite tasty though, nice rich flavour, although taste doesn't live up to look/smell. Smooth with low carbonation, easy drink.

Smells more alcohol than the 5% listed, perhaps as an impact from the wood. The wood taste is much in the finish. The taste includes very coffee, bit of roast, minute smoke. Interesting and curious to have had, but have had more enjoyable for style. Thanks for bringing back Douglas D. Had agsin 6 weeks later, and i downgraded a bit.

Surprising, especially from Speights. Was expecting something very thin and void of any significant flavour. This had flavour, not big and rich or anything, but fairly tasty. Light roasted malt tones, caramelly, with some light peatyness, enjoyable, but not overly complex.

A member of Speight's Craft range.

A deep red colour going on brown. Awesome nose that is very roasted, toasted, smokey etc etc. Smells like burnt grains and I love it.

Palate is bitter with the same characters coming through with a coffee and chocolate aftertaste. Relativley smooth for the taste.

Enjoyable Porter at an acceptable price!
