Pours a slightly cloudy, deep amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light caramel malt and faint citrus/tropical hops, with notes of grapefruit and pineapple, as well as just a hint of pine Taste is a good balance of light caramel malt and fruity, bitter, resinous and slightly flowery hops, with citrus and lighter tropical notes of grapefruit and pineapple, as well as some pine also coming through. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
I will applaud any brewery for making a proper West Coast IPA instead of endless hazies and while this doesn't quite live up to some of the better East/West Coast IPAs I've had recently, it's still an enjoyable enough example of the style that strikes a good balance of light caramel malt and bitter, resinous hops, with some good citrus and tropical notes that don't seem all that well-defined though, while there's also a certain flowery note to this that I'm not a huge fan of. Perhaps Amarillo hops were used here? Personally I never thought they were a good match for this kind of beer, but what do I know? Overall, this makes for an enjoyable example of the style with a good body and mouthfeel that could be a bit better defined and balanced for my personal taste though, while there's also a certain, odd bubble gum note to the aroma here, that doesn't carry over to the taste all that much though.
