Poured from a 32 oz. crowler can into a Duvel tulip glass.
L - Beer looks almost black in the glass but is revealed as hazy mahogany color when held up to the light. There is some cream-colored head on initial pour, but it disappears almost immediately and leaves just a single ring of fine bubbles around the glass. I don't hold the lack of head against a Scotch ale.
S - Strong malt aromas of dark grain, molasses, light smoke. Slight alcohol nose. Maybe the faintest earthy hops.
T - Earthy and lowly herbal hops are slightly more assertive in the flavors and roll in first. Dark bread and light molasses from the malt. Sweetish alcohol flavor but the finish is dryer than might have been expected.
F - Medium to thick body. Low carbonation and low hops bitterness. Mild alcohol presence.
O - This is a malty, restrained and nuanced Scotch ale. It is very well made and true to the style.
