Poured from a 16 oz can into a snifter.
L - Thick-looking, dark brown beer that is almost black. The head is a rich, dark brown color and made of the tiniest of bubbles, but it quickly disappears from the all but the edges of the glass. When swirled it makes an unusual lacing of the same fine bubbles.
S - Strong malt aromas appropriate for a stout, with roasted grains (not quite burnt) and faint smoke. Layered over those aromas are ones straight from a pastry bakery, vanilla cake with a touch of cinnamon and even (if I use my imagination) sugary icing.
T - Delicious stout flavors with dark bread, light-roast coffee and chocolate, and lightly toasted grain. A cake-like sweetness overpowers the typical roasted grain bitterness expected in a stout and leaves a sweet, full finish and aftertaste.
F - Thick body with a silky feel. Low carbonation, which makes the body a bit cloying. Moderate bitterness that is belied by the pastry sweetness. Alcohol is noticeable but not obtrusive.
O - A delicious beer. Maybe it's just the power of suggestion, but I really do taste a New Orleans King Cake in this can, just as the brewers says they intended.
