16-ounce can purchased at Wildwood Taphouse in Hillsboro, OR. No date stamp. Poured in a 10-ounce Living Häus Becher glass.
Look:
The translucent yellow-gold body is not particularly attractive for an IPA, but the tall, rocky head of sudsy white foam is appealing. Decent retention, leaves terrific lacing. The second pour is notably murkier than the first.
Smell:
Sweetened oat cereal with a vegetal undertow. Peppery and earthy. Hints of muddled fruit: apple skin, musky cantaloupe, white wine funk, Jujyfruits. If I didn't know this was an IPA, I would've called it a saison.
Taste:
A lot like the smell, but milder, with less musk and oats. Semi-sweet malt with notes of orange marmalade and some British ale yeast character. The beer features an irritating burn (hops? fusel alcohols?) from start to finish. A low-level bitterness simmers through the middle and ramps up at the end. Grainy, yeasty, notably sweet finish suggests underbaked apple bran muffins and Brach's orange slices.
Feel:
Medium-bodied with spritzy carbonation. Slightly rough texture. An oddly filling beer. Prickly with hop-burn or alcohol.
Overall:
Nice lacing and that's about it. Not clean. Leaves a burn on the palate. Doesn't fit together well, and doesn't have much fresh hop character. Neither a good beer nor a good fresh hop beer.
