a really well made black belgian ale, one of the more creative beers i have seen from these guys to date, and one thats super drinkable despite its complexity, dark color, and relatively sturdy alcohol content, its so balanced and refined, these guys should be proud of this. close to black in color but without a ton of viscosity and a tall light tan head on top with great retention and lace as i drink it down. aroma of roasted malt and some just brewed strong black coffee, a little bitter here, but more earthy than anything. this depth is offset by a light and airy belgian yeast strain that has quite clearly fermented this to bone dry and added some cool esters. i pick up red apple, sharp citrus, and a saltwater taffy note, appealing as can be. the flavor is a nice balance between these elements. no sweeter or fuller feeling caramel malts or anything, the dark grain stands on its own, maybe supported by a little earthy wheat, but its a simple build with a clean dark profile, without the added sugar flavor and texture a lot of the traditional belgian examples of the style employ. i like its basic nature, and its not short of flavor. the yeast is clean for being this flavorful, and as light as it is, it works so well with this darker grain, subtle pear, lemongrass, and even cooked banana to it. nice carbonation, lively feel, and dry on the swallow. smart and crafty little beer here, very well done!
