vienna lager seems like an unlikely find at a farmhouse brewery becoming known for their saison and wild ale types, but they had quite a few solid clean beers while we were in here, and this is a well done take on what appears to me to be a dying style in the american craft lexicon. golden reddish in color with deep bronze edges and super clear, with a short but stout white head, settling like almost a nitro head might. it smells great, deeply malty and classically european, the lager yeast a little less robust in the mix than i usually look for in the style, but not invisible. a nice nuttiness and sweet maltiness appear in the flavor, almost a honey nut cheerio cereal thing, sturdy but not heavy, slight maple and even vanilla, but this isnt desserty, its autumnal and earthy in a cool way, light minerals and the lager yeast there at the end. its not overly complex, its decidedly grain driven, but its fermented patiently and it drinks really nicely. it was the wild stuff that turned me on most in here, but these guys have more than demonstrated their competency across a wide range of styles! this is a nice example of the style.
