Midnight Oil Brewing Co. "Insomnia"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating. Sampled on 13 January 2022
Notes: Insomnia is a chocolate stout brewed with lactose, cocoa powder, cacao nibs, and vanilla beans.
Look: Opaque black in color beneath a full head of light brown foam. The head is made up of both smaller and larger bubbles, and it holds well and leaves some nice lacing about the glass.
Smell: The aroma displays the cocoa powder that's there along with a very soft roastiness.
Taste: Much more chocolate comes through than the aroma suggests. It's caramelish, and a touch nutty. There's not enough chocolate that it becomes a dessert beer, it's just an addition to an otherwise solid porter/stout. It's done in the English style and there are few hops although a smear of leafiness is present. A subtle yeasty fruitiness reminiscent of apple is there as well. The bitterness is median and it finishes dry with some chocolate lingering. Nicely balanced and rounded.
Feel: Medium-light in body with a standard carbonation level.
Overall: The main reason that this beer won't resonate with most drinkers is that it's done in the English style. It's not rich and bold like American stouts or porters. It is, however, a great beer.
