Midnight Oil Brewing Co. "Subspace Anomaly"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating. Sampled on 16 January 2022
Notes: Hazy IPA brewed with El Dorado, Citra, and Mosaic hops.
Look: Hazy golden body beneath a full head of white foam. Very good to excellent head retention, and very good lacing.
Smell: Bold and brightly hoppy with notes of hop resin, pine, orange/tangerine, berries, peach, melon, and pineapple. There's some straight-forward and lightly sweet malt there as well but the hops are the star of the show.
Taste: All of the notes found in the aroma remian in the flavor with the addition of passion fruit, lychee, gooseberry, grapefruit, lime, and pear. It's really quite complex, and highly satiating. A stiff bitterness with a little bit of hop burn acidity balances it and it finishes dry, earthy, resinous, and fruity. It's superbly balanced and rounded.
Feel: Medium to medium light in body and crisp.
Overall: Halfway between the more herbal/hoppy/bitter New England style IPAs and the more fruity (but not juicy)/sweetish NEIPAs this one hits the mark. It's remarkably satiating but still highly quaffable despite its 6.5% ABV.
