Notes via stream of consciousness: Once again Midnight Oil has delivered a beautiful label with a great name that fits into their overall theme, not that I'm really sure what that is. It's poured a hazy deep amber and orange body with golden highlights beneath a two finger thick head of rocky off-white foam. The aroma is both hoppy and malty. This is a West Coast IPA, right? Yes. I was just thrown for a second because it smells more like a double IPA with that malt coming through so strongly. The hops that are there are citrusy but not particularly clear as to any particular fruit. On to the flavor... ahhh, that rich maltiness is there! So nice! It's sweetish, bready, caramelish, and even honeyish. Very nice. The hop flavors are threaded through nicely as well. It's citrusy, floral, earthy, a touch piney, and even a bit tea-like. I'm getting notes of orange, apricot, and ruby red grapefruit on the fruit side, and herbs, "dankness", and a delicate peppery spiciness on the other. The bitterness is solid and it finishes dry with both the fruit (mainly apricot) and earthy, "dank", peppery, and black tea notes lingering. I'm not sure how I feel about this as a "West Coast Style IPA" but it's damned good, and I guess it doesn't really fit any other category. I'm impressed. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the fuller side, a little bit dextrinous, and gently crisp and then smooth across the tongue. I'm halfway through it at this point and I still have a solid surface covering although it is thin over more than half of it. It did hold up quite well though, and the lacing is great. I see an image of a bent over tree on a rock rising out of the sea beneath stratocumulus clouds. My only issue with this beer, and I don't personally care about it, is that the hop aroma and flavors aren't as bright as I normally expect from a WC IPA. The malt character is so wonderful that it more than makes up for that though. I should also note that I have no idea how old this is, so that could be a contributing factor. I'm not sure but this might be my favorite beer from Midnight Oil.
