Reviewed from notes taken Summer 2014 at a bar in Riga.
5.20% ABV. Traditional ale. This was just called "Tālavas Kēniņa Alus" on the menu, but I believe it's their Saviešu Alus; I do know it was definitely 5.20% ABV.
HEAD: 1 finger in height. White colour. Great creaminess and consistency. Smooth, even, full, soft, and aptly creamy, with nice froth. Retention is good (~6 minutes).
BODY: Dark copper colour of average vibrance. I see no yeast or sediment within.
Looks generally appealing. I'm looking forward to trying it, but there's nothing unique or special about the appearance.
AROMA: Cedar wood, including a wood sweetness. Tree sap. Cream. Neutral malts. Birch. Some faint floral hop notes. Twigs. It's got some interesting sappy oily aromatics as well. Apple juice. Apple skin. Fresh apples.
An appealing aroma of mild strength, with no off-notes or noticeable alcohol.
TASTE: Cedar, white oak, wood/barrel sugars, faint hints of apple, vague fruity hops, and neutral (amber?) malts. The wood really shapes the build, but it doesn't overwhelm the robust malt flavours.
Not too sweet nor too bitter. I find no off-flavours or overt booze.
A balanced rustic beer with unique woody tones. I'm really liking it, but I wish the fresh apple so evocative in the aroma was manifest in the flavour.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Has a cohesive build and it's well balanced, with well integrated wood.
MOUTHFEEL: Smooth, wet, quenching, medium-bodied, aptly thick, and approachable. Not oily or astringent.
Has a nice overall presence on the palate. This texture complements the taste nicely without accentuating specific notes or elevating the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Very drinkable and enjoyable fare and I'd definitely get it again. A lovely Latvian brew with unique and well-executed woody notes. Well worth picking up for those who come across it.
