Schneeeule Berlin “Sandy”
,75L brown glass bottle coded “Mindestens haltbar bis 29.10.26”. Sampled on 03.10.21.
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a little bit of a bigger beer from Schneeeule with a starting gravity of 11˚ Plato versus the usual 8˚, and 5.0% ABV versus the usual 3.5%. It’s brewed with water, wheat malt, barley malt, sea buckthorn, hops, sucrose, and Saccaromyces, Brettanomyces, and Lactobacillus. I have no idea what buckthorn is except that it’s a berry that grows in the sea. Having noted that, this beer is done in conjunction with the brewers from Brewer’s Tribute who gathered them. It’s poured a lightly hazy yellowish body beneath a head of white that drops readily. That’s to be expected of course, seeing as how this is a sour beer. The buckthorn makes an appearance in the aroma, and they’re fruity like berries, apple, citrus, and maybe even woody as well but I might be mixing something with the mineralish character that’s there from the lactobacillus and confusing it. To note, there is clear mineral character there. The taste actually delivers on what the aroma suggested, which is nice. I’m not really sure about these buckthorns but I am liking what I’m finding. I guess they’re a little bit like cranberries, but also like sweeter berries, citrus, and even cherry. As with the other Schneeeule beers it’s tart but not puckeringly tart. It’s just sharp enough in my opinion. That works really well with the buckthorns and the lightly sweetish malt underneath, and it finishes fruity, dry, and acidic. In the mouth it’s light-medium in body and zesty with a very fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. This is definitely one of my favorite beers from Schneeeule and I hope I’m able to get a hold of some more in the future.
