Enjoyed this beer a Cafe Gollem in Amsterdam at the Raamsteeg 4 location on 11/11/2015. 12oz. bottle served in a cervoise. Poured a murky cider-colored hue with a tight, quarter inch, cream-colored head. Nose expressed prunes, ethanol, toffee notes and grains. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of a smokey quality; however, a bit duller then suggested by the nose. Mouthfeel was light-medium in body with a carbonation just shy of lively. Overall, a decent American barleywine, but a little unbalanced.

The body is a dark red brown, rather dark for a barley wine, but almost clear when the sediment is not poured. In spite of the high alcohol the fine bubbled head is lasting. not too big though.
It smells of American citric hops and some caramel malt. Not boozy and rather clean fermented.
The taste is a bit harsh. There is clearly the hops and the malts but also a solventy taste to it that I could not find in the aroma.
Goes down without a burn and is appropriately carbonated nicely lifting this big boy.
A well done American Barley wine, that needs much more time to balance out. However, with time the hops will drop away and make this a very different beer.
