Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. Picked up the beer at the brewery several months ago and the cans have been in my cellar since purchase. Unfortunately no date stamp on the can.
the beer pours a clear mahogany color with deep ruby highlights on the edges of the glass. A soft pillowy khaki colored head foams up on my gentle pour. Almost overtops the glass, but not quite and I get the entire 16 oz into the vessel.
This foam fades slowly leaving scattered lattice and rests as a sturdy, but choppy surface covering. Each sip creates windowpane lattice as well. Pretty nice looking beer overall!
Aroma is some caramel and toffee and some rye bread with hints of herbal tea hops mixing through. Some general spicy note as well. no hints of any booze, which is solid for a 7.5% brew!
First sip reveals a lighter body than anticipated with a smooth texture and fine tingly carbonation. Beer drinks pretty easy on the physical traits.
Flavor is some caramel and toffee plus some toasted wheat bread. Definitely not a sweet malt presence. This also allows some herbal tea hops and a bit of a spicy hop note too. Here I do get some black pepper bite that I usually attribute to booze, but there is not accompanying heat. A little bit of caramel lingers after the swallow.
A fine doppelbock with some balanced flavor profile. Another solid brew from one of my favorite CT breweries.
