16 ounce prowler into tulip glass, filled on 3/10/2019. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, orange, red grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops and dark/roast/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, red grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery hops; and roast/charred bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange, red grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, cedar, mint, peppercorn, pine, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, dark/brown bread/crust, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Slight lingering resins/rinds through the glass. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.5%. Overall this is a delicious black IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/charred/drying finish. Very soft feel for the style, not aggressive. Awesome balance between citrus/earthy Tahoma hops and rich malts; with mild residual sweetness from lingering dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example.
