Good ol' Chrome crash, let's try it a second time. This is my least favorite beer from this brewery. But it did get me thinking about some existentialism regarding the XPA style. Shall we?
Pours a dark orange color. So it got me thinking, isn't this much darker/maltier than most XPA's? "Extra" pale right? 3/4" white head with good retention going for it. The aroma had plenty of woody caramel notes, just as much as the bittering hops it seemed to have. Not sure what "experimental" hops they are using here, but they don't really come off as aroma hops.
The taste goes off the rails, its heavy caramel and dusty presence really dominated. The bittering takes that old guitar woody twang thing going for it. I didn't sign up for this. Its well carbonated so it helps the mouthfeel get the offputting aspect away, but still, this isn't what I go looking for in an xpa experience. Most double ipas have a lighter malt bill these days. Cheap out, save some money and go lighter on that malt bill please.
