Whoever said that you have to eat your veggies before dessert kinda got it wrong. Clouds Brewing shows that you can certainly have them at the same time as they roll in the character of sweet potato into a sweeter and more chocolaty porter.
Also known as Harvest Porter, the dark ale pours deep coffee brown before crowning with a soft tan froth. Sweeter aromas of chocolate, nuttiness, coffee and caramel roll onto the nose ahead of a malty sweet taste of forecasted caramel, toffee, chocolate and a hint of maple.
As the malt focused porter rolls across the middle palate, the chocolate turns more earthy and bitter to take on a more bittersweet character and then toward a coffee-like late taste after the caramel and toffee flavors wear off. Trending bitter, the hops show a broad and woodsy, peppery bite that carry into a soilish finish.
Medium full in body, the session trends surprisingly dry and bitter for such a savory upstart. A medium-long aftertaste of coffee, woods and pepper carry well past the sweetness for a malty-dry impression overall.
