Zhang Men is actually a Taiwanese brewery, with this particular brewpub located in Hong Kong. Some will tell you that both Taiwan and Hong Kong are actually China, but the "beer laws" in each are different, so therefore, a place like Zhang Men is a nice addition to the craft scene, irrespective of which country/province you are in.
There are about a total of 20 taps, pretty evenly split between Zhang Men's offerings and those from other local Hong Kong craft breweries. The latter part is huge, as these breweries are, by law, not able to sell their beers for consumption from their premises, so therefore must rely on brewpubs like Zhang Men to get their beers into actual glasses. With respect to sampler platters, there are two choices, one of which is predetermined and one of which you get to choose your poison.
Meeting up with a friend from Korea who also enjoys the craft beer scene, we sat down at the bar and ordered our respective glasses, refilling twice to try out new flavors and characteristics. After having spent the day at a Hong Kong brewery as well as a local craft bottle shop, this actual bar was the perfect way to end what had been an intensive day of exploring the local Hong Kong craft beer scene. The service and information we got from the bartenders was comprehensive, only adding to what we had already learned throughout the day. Within the bar itself, the vibe was positive with seemingly a variety of customers, some of whom were just learning about Hops while others were well versed in the subject.
I would highly recommend Zhang Men, and would even welcome the opportunity to return to try out their others drafts which I did not get around to. From Mainland to Hong Kong to Taiwan, there is a burgeoning Craft Beer Scene happening in "China" and I am grateful to be a witness...
