Kook Birds makes its third appearance in our lineup; once again as a delightful ale. We put our Uncharted Citra in Pinot Gin barrels from our pals at Strathcona Spirits to age for 6 months. The result is a delightful and effervescent pale beer with a citrus light hop intermingled by gin botanicals. The finish is crisp and dry with lingering overripe fruit. We hope you like it. (2023 version 8.3%).

2023 version - this one is 8.3% ABV - purchased from Blind Enthusiasm at Callingwood Farmers Market.
Initially pours a bright clear golden with a massive foamy white head - turns cloudy as some dregs hit the liquid.
Aroma is fruity and floral with a good hit of the gin barrel/gin. Notes of apple, pear and some citrus with bready malt.
Sweet and fruity up front - again some apple, pear, ripe orange with floral notes and certainly the gin is evident. Backend herbal hop bitterness with a hint of tartness balanced by a bready malt sweetness.
Bright and relatively light mouthfeel with brisk carbonation tingling the tongue giving a crisp finish.

Kook Birds pours into my glass hazy pale amber in color. The head is rocky, bone white, and lasting.
Taking a sniff, the first thing I notice is the gentle aroma of gin. Hints of barrel come along next, giving more neutral wood notes than your typical oak or bourbon barrel aging. This leads to a center that is an intriguing combination of fresh earth and ripe fruit. Aromas of ripe fruit remind me of pear. Moving past the center is where I get a little hit of malt, smelling somewhat of hot bread, fresh from the oven.
Kook Bird's mouthfeel is smooth, crisp, and spritzy in nature. As with the nose, flavors of gin and wood lead the charge. Flavors of ripe pear and damp earth come through in the center. Malt flavors come through next, giving me fresh baked bread and hints of caramel. The finish is crisp, dry, and lastingly bitter. The bitter finish reminds me more of European hops than American and is well in keeping with the other flavors offered in this beer.
