Duncan is slightly hazy and a leathery brown colored lager with ruby highlights. The head is dense, mousse like and cream colored. Retention is good.
At first blush, Duncan's aroma has a chocolate and cocoa powder richness to it. Toasted rye bread gives a buffer between cocoa and subsequent aromas. Subsequent aromas give me the cherry cola scent of Dr. Pepper combined with a thin layer of damp earth and tobacco. Aroma finishes off short and sweet.
Duncan's flavor profile is interesting. Mouthfeel is smooth, initially dry with a lingering dryness in the finish. Up front flavors have more cocoa and leather than the nose did. Flavors have some of the same cherry cola flavor, but more understated. Cocoa and leather are definitely the more dominant characteristics here.
It's a decent enough beer, has some nice balance to it for sure. I'm just not a fan of the cola and dark cherry flavors. It's not an innovation I personally would have made with a beer of this type. Maybe it's just me.
