Piper’s Pale Ale was named in honour of Canadian war hero Piper James C. Richardson who was lost during the battle of the Somme during WWI. Awarded a Victoria Cross for his acts of bravery, we were inspired by his dedication and sacrifice to our country. Piper Richardson braved the trenches and began to play his bagpipes, inspiring the troops into battle with fury and determination. After assisting a wounded comrade back to safety and escorting enemy prisoners, he realized he had left his pipes behind and was lost in action while attempting to retrieve them. In Piper’s memory, we salute his bravery and toast in his honour!

355ml can (@4.8% ABV) - part of the newest mixed 12-pack from VIB to show up in Alberta. Quite the moving story behind the naming of this offering.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium copper amber colour, with four fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves some decent layered cirrus cloud pattern lace around the glass as it rather lazily subsides.

It smells of grainy and bready caramel malt, a bit of buttery crackers, subtle domestic citrus rind, a faint hard water flintiness, and more understated earthy, leafy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and bready caramel malt, a hint of biscuity toffee, some muddled citrus and pome fruitiness, ethereal yeast, and more understated leafy, herbal, and piney verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly benign in its complacent-seeming frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and generally smooth, with nothing present here that might cause any sort of ruckus. It finishes off-dry, as the malt and lingering mixed fruity notes keep on keepin' on.

Overall - this is a serviceable enough version of the style, with the hop quotient definitely more on the flavourful, as opposed to the bitter side of things. Simple, and easy to drink, while considering how lucky we are to be able to choose what we do with our extra time.

Pint served in a mug at some fish and chips joint in Victoria. To be honest, I'm not really a fan of pale ales, but it was the only thing they had on tap, and the bottle selection consisted of four different macro lagers.

A: honey, light skim of head
S: sweet, pale malts, very mild
T: pale malt sweetness, corn, not much hop presence
F: a bit lighter than medium-bodied. might have been better with more carbonation.
