Bottle: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a dirty brown foamy had with light retention and not much lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with light residual sugar notes with some vinous notes. Taste is also a mix of dry caramelized malt notes with some vinous notes, light oak with some subtle residual sugar notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol notes. Not bad but missing some depth.

650ml bottle - pretty cool to finally see this (and its un-oaked ancestor) show up in Alberta.
This beer pours a mostly clear, dark red-brick brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, rather loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves a bit of random boiling cauldron lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, some cherry-forward woody red wine, bittersweet cocoa powder, a further black stone fruitiness, and very tame earthy, musty, and perfumed floral green hops. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a lesser toffee sweetness, much more subtle vinous berry fruity notes, a hint of free-agent ashiness, medium chocolate, and some ethereal weedy, earthy, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is quite laid-back in its bland frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and sort of smooth, as a wooden acridity takes things down a notch or so here. It finishes off-dry, the malt faltering a bit, but essentially keeping it between the ditches, as such.
Overall - this is a reasonably well-rendered version of the style, with the red wine barrel treatment noticeable, but thankfully not in a high-handed manner. Easy to drink, given the expertly integrated 19-proof booze quotient, and a worthy celebrant for this operation's big 3-0.

Vancouver Island Brewing 'BA Hermannator' Ice Bock @ 9.5% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $10
A-pour is a murky brown from bottle to glass with a small tan/beige head leaving a spotty lace along the stange
S-pick up the french oak red wine barrels
T-chocolate malts give way to dried fruits , kinda takes on a sherry aspect ,
MF-ok carbonation , full bodied
Ov-interesting take for the 30th anniversary ,
