Once voted Canada’s Favourite Confection, there are few things more Island than the Nanaimo Bar. Decadent and sweet, featuring flavours of graham cracker, chocolate, coconut, and vanilla, this Imperial Porter is our homage to that world famous treat from Edith Adam’s 1953 prize cookbook.

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate/espresso brown with two fingers of pale tan white head.
Smell - Roasted malts, dark chocolate, coconut, vanilla extract, slight graham cracker aroma, earthy hops.
Taste - Roasted malts and rich cocoa/chocolate, followed up with earthy hops, vanilla, and some coconut. Graham cracker is very subtle.
Mouthfeel - Medium-to-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Very sticky on the palate.
Overall - As of fan of Vancouver Island's original Nanaimo Bar (and as a fan of Nanaimo bars in general), this one does not disappointment. I always find it difficult to detect the honey graham cracker crumb, as it is a subtle flavour, but every other flavour delivers its promise.

A: Black liquid with 1/4" mocha head.
S: Alcohol and graham cracker.
T: Alcohol, graham cracker, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and coconut in the finish.
M: Medium viscosity with a drying finish.
O: The flavours are sweet (what do you expect, its a Nanaimo bar beer) but the beer finishes dry and is not cloying. However, I would have like to have the alcohol hidden a little bit better (maybe 50% less sugar). Overall this is a very good beer that I hope to have again as I would drink it year round like I used to drink Swans's Coconut Porter before it was axed.
