From tasting notes 6/23/21
Had on-tap at Docent Brewing in San Juan Capistrano, CA

Appearance - Served up in a snifter, black in color with cola brown edging where light can penetrate. An everpresent layer of suds across the surface, thickening up where the edge meets the glass. Fair lacing, with a bit of broken webbing and broken lines, but mostly spotting.

Smell - Chocolate upfront and buried deep, but a surprising amount of roast along with a hint of bitterness.

Taste - Follows the nose. An array of chocolatey flavors, dark, fudge and milk chocolate, met by a respectfully, roasty bitterness on the finish to balance out this beast, along with underlying vanilla. Aftertaste lingers with roast, vanilla, fudgy chocolate and hoppy bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied with fair carbonation. Thick, creamy texture. Smooth, then a dry finish.

Overall - Tasty, balanced imperial chocolate stout. This is maybe the best straight chocolate impy I've had since Rogue's Double Chocolate Stout.

Bruiser pours as black as can be. Nothing. Empty space. A thick tan froth explodes to form a mountain on top, then descends with a crater, before ultimately leaving a dense and rocky island surrounded by a coast of rich espresso foam. Lacing everywhere.

Wow is this thing heavy with intoxicating aromas. Molasses, brown sugar, charred bread, and even wood, then dark and semi sweet chocolate even raisin and olive juice. There is a lot going on here.

And the flavor continues the pleasantries. I don't know what was used in this thing, but something definitely embraces a deep woodiness. Chocolate and molasses once again take the main platform, but this is rich with some kind of dark fruit as well. Dates? Fig? Tons of roasted grain. Intense.

Bruiser feels somewhere between a dry and bitter RIS, and a sweet and heavy American Imperial Stout. As with the rest of its character, this is bold, heavy and intense. Lots of sweet, then a good helping of bitter, but ultimately thick, creamy, and filling.

This is one hell of a stout. Great job once again, Docent!
