Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of roasted malt, chocolate and vanilla, with hints of bourbon and nuts. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by roasted malt and chocolate with hints of vanilla, licorice, smoke, bourbon and a light, roasted nuttiness. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation.
Considering that this was brewed with bourbon-soaked oak chips, rather than proper barrel-aged, there is good, if subtle, bourbon note to this. The hazelnuts are even subtler, but noticeable as a light, roasted, nutty presence. Pretty good balance, mouthfeel could be better though.
