i like when a traditionally styled beer has a little nuance to make it stand out, especially when it isnt just a new school dry hopping or a barrel treatment, and thats what we have here, a well made classic bock type, pale and a bit strong, but with a unique enough malt profile to stand out from the crowd of these, at least for me. i can smell and taste a crackery pils type malt underneath the more classic german dusty and biscuity grain flavors i know in the style. its less sweet too, but retains a sort of honey character through it, almost floral to me. the lagering part is well done, crisp for what it is, fast finishing even if its off dry, and with great carbonation. the yeast seems very german to me, right for the beer here. its the grain that makes it stand out, oddly fresher than most, and that lighter but distinctive pils note is a lot of fun. a bit of exposed alcohol at the end is really the only part that slows me down on this, i like the fuller body. cool beer, my first from these guys, i love bock types this time of year when spring is finally emerging!
